Navigation and Header

How to manage your information architecture of your site

What it is

Every page carries the same header: the NSW masthead, your site name and description, and the main menu built from your pages. It is site chrome — the site assembles it on every page, so there is no header block to add or arrange.

How to add it

You don't. The header is on every page already, and the three parts of it you can change are edited elsewhere: the site name and description come from the Title and Description of the site's home page; a site-wide message is the Global alert, written once and shown on every page; and the menu comes from the pages themselves, as described below.

Configure it

Main navigation

Main navigation is automatically created from your content based on the following rules

  • Pages created at the homepage appear as a top level menu item
  • Pages created when viewing another page appear as a subitem of that page
    • however the main menu only displays the first two levels
  • Additional content types can be made to appear in the menu using the Navigation control panel

You never edit the menu itself — you edit the pages, and the menu follows. Renaming a page relabels its menu item, reordering pages reorders the menu, moving a page moves it, and a page can be kept out of the menu altogether.

Rename, reorder, move and hide a page — the menu follows each change

Header

Masterbrand agencies can't customise the header however Independent agencies have options to change the logo, title and colours.

Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs can be set to appear at a certain depth level in site. They will always follow the same Information Archtecture as as the Main Navigation

Tips

  • You can hide any particular Page using "Exclude from navigation" in the page settings
  • You can rearrange the site Information Archtecture anytime using the Contents view and drag & drop or cut and paste.
  • Using the Listing Block you can display the contents of the current page in the current page
  • You can adjust the url using the "Short name" property in the page
  • You can adjust the menu item name by changing the Title of the Page

The Global alert is the site-wide message that sits above the header; Text covers the Title and Description the header's two lines come from; Side navigation is the in-section menu; the Footer is the matching chrome at the bottom of the page.
