What a content rule is

A rule pairs a trigger (a workflow change, something added or edited, a login) with conditions and actions. A typical rule: when a workflow state changes to “pending”, email the reviewers group.

Rules are set up by site managers in the backend control panel, and can be assigned site-wide or to a single section — so the announcements folder can behave differently from the rest of the site.

What rules are good for

Review notifications (email on submit), housekeeping (move or copy content when it’s published), and audit trails (log particular changes). If you find yourself doing the same follow-up action after every edit, ask your site manager to make it a rule.
